SUBJECT 1

SUBJECT 2 Demasting a Boat 2

The 2010 Swiftsure race was cold windy and wet.  More than 60 of the 182 boats dropped out of the race and two boats were dismasted.  One of the dismasted boats belonged to Duncan and Maggie Cook from EYC.  Duncan will be at the meeting to recount the events.

SUBJECT 1 Klaus and Johanna Gruber with Jack and Pat Armitage will show their new West Coast sailing video.  The video covers the rounding of Cape Caution, Fitz Hugh Sound, Rivers Inlet, and the Broughton Archipelago.  If you have seen one of their previous cruising reports you know they do a great job of taking you along on their cruise.  You don't want to miss this.

TECH TIP - ?

ELECTIONS - For the following positions (elected shown):

  • Commodore (Bob Brunelle).
  • Vice Commodore (Phil Sutton).
  • Treasurer (Ronald van Amsterdam -> Rod McMullen).
  • Fleet Captain ( Jim Spalding).
  • Communications (Bob Schimmel).

SUBJECT 1 At this weeks meeting of the AOSA Phil Sutton will discuss the measurement of water clarity on Lake Wabamun by using a Secchi disk....to be carried out by amateur volunteers - that is to say, us.   The term amateur can have a pejorative ring.  But in science it retains the meaning of its French root amour, love, for amateurs do science because it's what they love to do.  Without remuneration or reward, enthusiastic amateurs survey birds, tag butterflies, measure sunlight, and study transient solar eclipse phenomena.  Others count sunspots, discover comets, monitor variable stars, and invent instruments.

In addition I hope we will discuss planning for the rest of the winter meetings.
