Being familiar with the operation of your DSC-VHF will improve
your chance of getting help for a DISTRESS or EMERGENCY call.
Add your MMSI number & vessel name to this list so others
will recognize you. Then store the numbers in your DSF-VHF call directory.
To be included on this list, submit your data to the
web master. This page is printable for use on your boat. See
notes at bottom.

Mayday Rescue on Lake Wabamun – Making It Safer for Boaters in 2023. |
|||||||||||
Currently, the only system in
place to rescue a boater who is in danger of losing crew
and/or craft is to phone 911. This call goes to Parkland County in Wabamun.
They have emergency responders on 24hr call who are trained to deal with an on-water emergency or distress. A Boston Whaler, Zodiac and Sea-Doo are
stationed at Wabamun. In the event of an on-water
emergency call 911 the operator will assess the situation and deploy the appropriate resources. If the circumstances require the the RCMP, that decision will be made by the 911 operator. This document is offered to start the discussion among boaters, yacht clubs, and local authorities to
identify emergency dispatch procedures. The following information came from a presentation and panel discussion on the
topic of marine radio at a monthly meeting of the Alberta Offshore Sailing
Association on February 19th, 2014. |
|||||||||||
1 | A boater should file a float plan (date,
time of departure, destination and time of return, skipper, crew, MMSI
number, etc.) with friends, relatives and/or their respective club house. |
||||||||||
2 | A registered MMSI number and DSC-VHF radio can help in a distress
situation. All boaters should consider acquiring both a DSC-VHF
Class D radio and e/w it with an MMSI number and a connection to a GPS receiver.
There is no fee for this service. This gives a boater the capability
of sending a distress call with coordinates. |
||||||||||
3 | The cellular coverage of Wabamun Lake is now complete
for Rogers and TELUS service providers.
Sunshine Bay is occasionally marginal. There is a long distance fee from the West end of the lake. |
||||||||||
4 | A satellite phone can be bought at London
Drugs for about $120. Satellite phone service is quite expensive for
Wabamun Lake. |
||||||||||
5 |
www.findmespot.ca/en/ explains SPOT, a satellite tracking system to
alert a potential rescuer. There is a fee for SPOT service. The limiting factor is that the recipient of the emails must have internet service to receive the SPOT emails. |

www.inreachdelorme.com
is a similar satellite tracking system offering personal satellite tracking,
messaging, and navigation technology. The limiting factor is that the
recipient of the emails must have internet service to receive the Inreach
emails. But you can send a coded message directly from the device. |

AOSA Recommendation: that this discussion
continue until a reasonable, workable solution is implemented
to duplicate the coast guard emergency watch and rescue function on
Wabamun Lake. What can you, your yacht club and/or
organization do to help? Affected Groups:
